I also have this bike that I've been told is an early 40's Western Flyer - if you have any idea based on the pic, please let me know. It has wooden pedals.

The bike is back in Michigan in storage. I might be able to get my mom to run out back and take a look for me. Would the number be under the frame on this bike?

Also, you mentioned this bike being a tank bike. Were there less "deluxe" models sold without the tank? Or would this have definitely had the tank?

I bought some truss rods, and also picked up an old WF rear rack. What else do you see that might be missing? I wondered about a headlight, etc...

The serial number is stamped on the underside of the crank hanger. There may be more than one set of numbers. The main number is a letter followed by five numbers.

I refer to this model as the Bent Tank because of the shape of the tank that fits the frame, although it was available both with and without a tank. Other fittings and accessories varied by model and year. I’ll pull some references together and post them.

Thanks for any help you can give. I have been torn with what to do with this bike...leave it as is or try to fix it up? The handlebars are completely rusted (no chrome showing at all). The right pedal is slightly bent. The rear wheel barely turns. The springs on the seat are all rusty, and the seat itself is rather tattered. But it looks so cool! I am just concerned that if I don't do something for it, it is going to get worse as the years go on.
