I build stuff.
Hey guys, I was lucky enough in the past few weeks to enter a photo contest (through Instagram) that Tapewood Grips put on and win the prize of a set of Tapewood Gordito grips.
They were nice enough to open up a contest and give away a set of grips (and free stickers to the other participants) and so I thought I'd be nice and give you a review of their product, which I happen to think is pretty sweet.
If you wanna see how the contest went down you can either follow them on Instagram @tapewood or if you don't have Instagram, go here: http://instagram.com/tapewood and you can see the contest announcements and other contestants.
So, the package arrived today, just as they communicated it would:
It was hard not just tearing into it, but I had to find a camera, great shipping:
I love the packaging, and notice they are numbered as each set is hand made:
These are walnut, they also offer them in a light maple:
You also get a little allen key, which meant I didn't have to dig around in the shop to find mine:
They installed easily and are made for standard 7/8" bars and fit snug, the check ring is solid brass:
If anything, you might get called out for "classing up the joint" when you show up with a set of these:
When I first saw these grips I was thinking what you probably are "Man, those things look big!" Well, they are bigger around than your average set of grips, but these are made on a lathe from hard wood; make them too thin and they wouldn't last. But when I put them on the bike, the feel is just right. They address this on their website, "Aptly named "Gordito Grips", these fatties give your grasp a uniquely relaxed feel." These are perfect, and if you've read things I've written in the past you might already know that I have carpal tunnel, so this forced "relaxed" grip actually eases the tension in my wrist and doesn't aggravate my carpal tunnel. This is a relaxed cruising grip.
Plus, they look awesome with rust!
I quit smoking cigars about 15 years ago, but I'm glad someone rolled these for me:
