I went to take my '72 Raleigh Grand Prix out for a ride yesterday, so I was checking through its tool bag to make sure I was prepared to deal with a flat. Tube, multitool, pump - check, check, check.
Then I checked for a wrench to fit the axle nuts. The fronts are 14mm, no problem. The rear was odd, though. I didn't have anything that fits it. 15mm doesn't go on and 16 is way loose. Same situation with 9/16 & 5/8s. Measuring across the flats of the nuts, I get 15.3 mm, or .602".
Is this an oddball British thing, or maybe an odder-ball British Raleigh thing? On the stand I can use a cresent wrench if need be, but I prefer not to carry one of those in the bike bag. Obviously, I should be able to replace the nuts with a standard size (assuming the thread is metric). But these are the original chrome acorn nuts with a red insert on the end with the Carlton "C" logo. I'd prefer to keep them. Maybe the solution is to buy an extra 15mm and grind it open some. Actually, that seems reasonable. Thanks for the help, guys!
