Just wondering if any bikes came stock with steel or aluminum gears in the rear derailleur? I had a mountain bike with some aftermarket purple anodized gears, but I was wondering more about stock.

I am going to use one of these as a chain tensioner and I have plenty of old derailleurs, but wondered if I should keep my eyes out for some metal ones or if I shouldn't even waste my time.

I know plastic will serve me just fine, I just like metal.

Performance bike has them either 15 or 19 a pair

If I spent that type of money I could probably pick up a used tensioner for my tandem for cheaper and it would be the actual part needed instead of something I'd have to build. haha

The older ones had metal wheels. I'm guessing plastic was quieter? Or maybe just cheaper.

The oldest derailleurs I've pulled have been from teh 70s, all plastic. I agree, probably quieter and cheaper.

The older Huret Allvit derailleurs as used on old Schwinn's had steel pulleys with adjustable ball bearings, quite cool. They were later replaced by plastic. These are not to hard to find in shops junk boxes or on ebay.

Gives me something to look for.

I used to see toothless steel ones on some really old bikes decades ago, but haven't seen any in a long time. I know, big help.
