i picked up some generic rim brake pads for the schwinn twinn the other day, put em on and put the old ones right back on  i dont know if they were complete junk or meant for something else. do they make pads that are better for chrome rims ??? i think most stuff must be made with aluminum wheels in mind, just askin to ask.

I'm pretty sure that the pads for cantilevered brakes and the other types of brakes, like the V brakes are different. The Cantilevered pads are shorter and thicker than the other ones. You might have simply picked the wrong type of pad.

I dont know, lots of BMX bikes have chromed rear rims. In fact i was riding my brothers bike last night, stopped just fine. His pads were green, maybe "Kool Stop" brand?

short and blocky like the originals but had like an arrow design in them. hard as a rock though so im thinking these may have just been bottom of the barrel cheapos after all. guess you get what you pay for.

i always heard koolstop was the best, my lbs doesnt have em so i guess i will be ordering some ... thanks for the link clancy

as for the filing... already did that with no results.

if ya hate em already, try soaking them in mineral oil. it should soften the rubber a little.

I use V brake pads on my side pull caliper brakes. Those pads have more surface and the rubber is better quality. They fit without special modifications.

A little dielectric grease, like used on weather stripping and rubber suspension bushings on automobiles. Rub it in and wipe it off.
