May be a stupid question but when people talk about rim sizes such as....
You talking about a 1 3/8" wheel, like from a 10-spd or 3-spd touring bike? Won't work. 1.75" type rim needed
where does the 1 3/8" number come from?

The actual diameter of the rim is different. The 1 3/8 and the 1.75 are both talking about tire width generally. But there are about 5 or so different rim diameters when talking about 26". Typically decimal sizes (1.75, 2.125, 3.0) will all fit the same standard rims while fractional sizes (1 3/4 and 1 3/8) fit only the rims they were made for.

Sheldon Brown's site explains it pretty good
