Since having the baby has cut way back on my riding time I commute to work via bicycle. I don’t want to ride one of my current bikes in the salt and snow. Plus I really need a project to help with boredom.

Decided on this huffy frame with the worst paint I’ve ever seen. I’m not picky about paint but this repaint sucks.

Some time with a wire brush highlighted this was even worse then I expected.

This means I’m undecided with what kind of finish to use. Decided to break out the sander and investigate further.

. It’s as ugly as I expected, but no cracks and only one dent. Got a few nice days here so I need to decide if I want it painted or not. Headed out for the wife’s birthday dinner.

You could leave it 'rough and ready' and just clear coat it or use a varnish over the top. Or paint it with a primer, maybe the Rustoleum Filler Primer, automotive. It is oil based, so you want to use an oil based top coat as well. I have done this on a frame with uneven surface and it works pretty well.

Either way, good to see you in the build off again! Love the idea of a winter rider!

My “paint booth” could use some lighting improvements🤣

putting on a few heavy layers of filler primer @OddJob that was my plan. It won’t be perfect but I didn’t want to do a rust finish on this.

Managed to get everything coated in primer today before it got to cold. Still plenty of sanding to do but won’t have time for a couple days.

Quick sample spray of some colors I like. I think I know what I want to do for final colors now. Will try to get the color laid down this week.

Squeezed in a few minutes here and there to scuff the main tubes again. I know it won’t ever be perfect but i figured one more sand and primer wouldn’t hurt.

Then when I got home from the wife’s birthday get together I tossed some black on it just to use as a guide coat and .... this things rough

Probably primer again tomorrow with hopes of paint by the weekend

Love those old Huffman frames. The big dropouts are so cool/

Started a dry fit of everything to verify I like the colors. Was torn on matching fork Or black.

I think with the bars and fork color matched it works. The fork turned out to be a nightmare. 80s mountain bikes are a weird mix of axle size and hub width

I apparently own one wheel that fits that criteria and it was on another bike. My homemade wrenches to the rescue.

Ignore the tire it was on the wheel. And the seats just there So I could sit and adjust the bars.

Quick reminder of why I don’t paint things. Some scratches and plenty of dirt already. To be fair the paint was rushed because of weather and I did zero mock up.

Was givin this thing by a customer at work. Not much useful except maybe that 3 speed hub. Maybe the winter bike needs multi speed. Just realized the tires I plan to order no longer “work” with the build because of paint color.

Really dig the color matched fork / bars / frame! The ideas a percolating !

I do like 3 speed coasters...
Opportunity to find a unique shifter.
Classic paint too.

Squeezed in about an hour today and managed to add grips. They match the seat. Normally I’m a modern grip person but wanted to try these.

I learned the pedals I wanted to use are 9/16 spindle, I save way to much crappy chain and might do a skinny tire build. Hopefully test ride it this weekend!

just smooth sand it with 5000 grit to clean it up some. then clear over it. to protect the bare spots from rock salt.
