Hi everyone,

I am working on a bike build for my Daughter, and after removing the handle bar grips to clean and polish the chrome, a rather large amount of rust fell out of the tube... looking in the ends I can see that the tube is quite rusted. As an aside I may start a thread in the RRBBO5 forum for this build as it has taken over the time I had to work on my RRBBO5 frame...

Now question #1. What is the best way of cleaning the rust out of the tubing?

I remember reading a thread that someone mentioned a spray/foamy rust inhibitor/oil/stopper that they got at an auto parts shop (maybe Autozone?). I haven't been able to find that thread, or the product.

So question #2. What is the best way to stop rust inside the bike tubing?

thanks guys,

M

They make some special stuff called Boeshield but it can be spendy. Linseed works but you have to get it in there. Storage fogging oil -aerosol would work but may not set up. OR just spray some wd40 down them.

That being said. Most old cruiser frames and parts are so thick, the rust is not hurting them. The chain stays are usually the only thing affected. treating them will help but may not be necessary. Just remember to coat the seat post and handlebar stem with a light coat of grease before inserting.

Actually removing the rust may just be exposing new layers of iron to the atmosphere. Most steel handle bars have some rust inside, due to condensation of humidity. I'd say shake out whatever's loose, so it doesn't hold moisture, and use any of the mentioned materials to inhibit continued oxidation.
