Schwinn 5 speed rear derailleur

Could I replace a worn out late 60's model Schwinn Sting Ray derailleur with a newer Shimano short cage one? If so, what is the best model to use for that application? The shifter that will be used is a late 60's model friction type Schwinn Stik Shift. I would hate to buy a new one just to find that it won't work.

Yes, as long as the shifter is friction. Make sure you adjust the limit screws to contain the movement to just 5 speeds, and the cage set screw to the right distance from the freewheel.
