so i was wondering if anybody knows what years where the chicago black phantom made. i know they made some in the 90's but don't know for how many years. also do all shwinn chicago built frames have this welded seam on the bb shell

does the 90's black phantom have this same welded seam on the bb shell?
what are the differences between the old and the new?

I found a few 1995 on ebay. Asked the sellers to send me some pictures and they don't want to. One told me to go to the schwinn site to see pictures. What is the mystery with these bikes?

I have 50's dx frame sitting next to me and it's got that same exact seam. I would imagine the 1995 does not.

hey axsepul.. i have 2 sting rays one from 65 and the other from 79 and they have this seem also... don't know how much that will help but they are Chicago Schwinn's... not sure if my pre-war does but i can look...

I'll have a look under my 1995 Rolling Rock cruiser- my guess is, since it's a Chinese frame, it won't have the seam.

All my60's and 70's Chicago Schwinns seem to have it, though the very early bikes with the serial number there are better finished.

That's a good quick reference to check for the people trying to pass off a 1995 as a "1950's" that's worth considerably more. Though I have to say, the repro Phantom was a very well done copy.

Thanks. According to one of the articles I 1995 all bikes were built in china except for the black phantom and only the black phantom has that welded seamed on the bb shell. I'm just want somebody to post a pic of that bb shell to verify and if somebody can pin point the differences between the old and the new

I'm still looking for this info and was the 1949 black phantom the only year with the black phantom chainguard decal. does all 49 have front drum brake and what about the other years. Where all the seats brown on all black phantoms?

i looked at a black phantom repro a couple years ago.it has the seam in the bottom bracket.supposedly schwinn went through a lot of trouble to replicate it.
the forebrake on phantoms was an option.not all had the brake.my 51 phantom has the black phantom guard.and the seat is black.things can get changed over time and i think mine originally came with the brown seat.mine also has the forebrake.you could also get a bendix manual 2 speed rear wheel after 54.here's an article with some info on repop phantoms.hope it helps, brian.

The 90's Phantom has an investment cast BB shell that was made in China. The welding seam is cast in just for looks. The frames were made in Riverside County, CA, by Arc n Spark Welding. I posted a picture of some of the individual frame components.

it does have the welded seam but it does look to perfect and straight!

so island schwinn was the black phantom offered in both brown and black seats?

Investment casting is a form of "Lost Wax' casting. This is one of the oldest styles of metal working known to man. For details search the web.

Ok I got too curious and checked mine, they ALL have the seam.
'52 Phantom
'52 Hornet
'53 Phantom
'55 Racer
'57 Straight Bar
'61 Twin-straight bar
60-something Heavy-Duti

My prewar stuff does not have the seam.
