I am going to look at a Pea Picker tomorrow, are there any telltale #'s to look for to be sure it is the real deal, It is NOT one of the new models it is late 60'-70's, just want to be sure it was not pieced together years ago, don't crates have specific #'s. Thanks in advance

First initial of serial number is the Month. A=Jan B=Feb C=Mar D=Apr E=May F=June G=July H=Aug J=Sept K=Oct L=Nov M=Dec

Second initial of serial number is the Year. 3=1963, 4=1964, A=1965, B=1966, C=1967, D=1968, E=1969, F=1970, G=1971,
H=1972, J=1973, K=1974, L=1975

Krates with the stick shifter on the top bar were made from 1968 to 1973. Hopefully this will help you.

as far as i know krates do not have unique numbers which i think is what you were asking. the year is the only thing to go off of to at least know that the frame is the right era to be one. make sure it has all it's correct krate parts as this does help a red flag would be if it is obviously pieced together. once you know the year of the frame some of the rear derailleurs have the year stamped on them to help cross reference but also keep in mind that these parts were not made the same time as the bikes so there could be a one year difference. good luck

I'll bet there are more Krate "parts bikes" out there than there are Phantom "parts bikes". I'd say take a chance if it's a cheap bike, but if you are going to buy an investment grade Krate, I'd have someone that really knows Krates inside and out and have them pick it apart to make sure. Gary
