How good are the from schwinn from Target? I understand that the parts are cheap but what about the frame is it a good frame even though the parts are low quality?

lol I might just do that then because I can not find a cheap cruiser anywhere not even on craigslist. I just want an old cruiser to ride around. Does anybody have any sugestion on where I could find one? I dont care how old of rusty it is.
Thank you!

If they are the same as the ones at K-Mart and Walmart, the whole bike will work for just riding around, if you clean, lube and adjust everything before using it. If you try to use it as an MTB or for stunts, expect it to fail.

and never never ever leave it in the weather the components are so cheaply chromed they rust in no time and the brakes are always crap too unless they have v brakes or somethin LOL

On CL, I've put a wanted ad in the bikes for an old rusty beachcruiser and have found 2 for 10 bucks at different times. Just some elbow grease cleaning them up , and a couple tires and tubes, and for less than 40 bucks a decent cruiser. Many people have the cheap mountain bikes, I always pass them by, unless the tires and seat look good, and it's cheap. I take what I want off it and throw the rest in the trash. The other place is yard sales, I ask if they have any old bikes that don't work out back, and I've gotten a few good ones cheap that way.

Not sure if this helps, but watch the local Goodwill / Salvation army stores too..I have had good luck there, picked up bikeangel a beautiful Sun Custom in beautiful shape for $25..even had a "frequent flyer" $5 off coupon so picked it up for a $20 !! And yep, yard sales are usually pretty good..and #3 stay after the CL, I have had a ton of luck, but you have to act quick ! Good luck and happy hunting !

i know a young kid that has a different old bike everytime i see him. he said his grandpa is the local junkman/scrap metal guy and gives all bikes he gets to him. might be a worthwhile connection.

I just posted on craigslist. hopefully I can find something.

@x-ray: that is a good idea. I work at a church and we give out food for homeless people, they might know something.

Thank you for all the ideas!

Check yard/ Garage sales and remember to go early on the first day of the sale. Most of the times garage sale bikes a relatively cheap and people are just looking to get rid of them.

Scrape together $110 and buy one of the new O.P. cruisers at Wal-Mart.

If your local store doesn't have them in stock, use their site to store option.

While there's no denying that a $300.00-$500.00 bike shop bike is way better than a $90.00-$200.00 dept. store bike, a lot of people who are paid to look at these things don't really know much about dealing with mechanical stuff, beyond just using it. Also, some of them just view everything cheap as inferior and beneath them. You could put a Huffy sticker on a hand-built Proteus and tell them it came from Sears, they would declare it to be junk.

And as stated earlier...if you don't plan to bomb down your nearest mountain on the thing or spend your days jumping ramps on it, most of the frames on the market will probably hold up under normal cruising conditions.

I've got a Schwinn Point Beach and it's an okay rider. First off, the chrome fenders....if you can call it chrome. Those got bit by the rust bug bad and not even a cool rustic worn look. Just pure junk. The chrome on the cranks is very odd as it looks like someone sprayed them with chrome spray paint. The grip shifter completely blew apart and the seat is very deceiving in looking like it could possible to comfy. I just got it because of the aluminum frame and it has cantilever brake mounts. It's now completely stripped waiting to be another project. Thank God I picked it up for only $50 from an older gentleman. His wife picked it up for him and he said he didn't like how it rode and put it away. When I got it the bike was spotless and he still had the tags and original receipt that showed it wasn't even a year old. If I paided full price from Wally world I would of pretty disappointed. Now the Schwinn Varsity road bike they offer I'd pick up in a second, but don't even start me on the fixed/ss bike. lol.

Going back to the original question, I think it speaks volumes about how Pacific Cycle wants to do business when their web site tells you that the bikes on the site are only the "catalog" bikes, the Schwinn Select series sold at dealers.

They do not support, warranty, or supply spare parts for the department store models, even through their own "dealer" section of the company. I don't get it but that's how they operate.

Save up the money and visit a local bike shop. Schwinn makes some really cool stuff, way above and beyond the ones sold at the department stores. There are a dozen models in the catalog that I would be proud to own.

There are a dozen models sold at Target and Walmart that I'd be embarrassed to own. I think that sums it up.

I have one too, I quickly swapped the seat, tires, and pedals:

Yeah, I had a Jaguar I bought from Target on sale, and had the seat, pedals, and ww's on it. But when the point beach came out, with the rack and two tone paint, I had to have one! Swapped the parts, and sold the Jaguar. I'll probably swap the fenders, they are super cheesy, plus the front got dented when stuff fell over in my old shed! -Adam
