Hey guys,

Sooo im trying to get the freewheel off my 74 fastback I ordered a park tool fr-4 the only one in the lbs catalogue that said schwinn on it finally got it today and its too small :?: like way to small the fr4 on it almost the same if not smaller as my shimano freewheel tool but my fastbacks splines on the freewheel are probably 1 1/4 if not bigger from one side to the other... does anyone know a tool I can get ???

Thanks guys
Ty

Your LBS does'nt have one that fits? Usually they will spin one off for a very minimal charge or free depending on your familiarity with them. If it were me, I would establish the brand of the cassette in question and go from there. Personally, I have not run across a Schwinn cassette that an FR-1 didnt remove. I'm assuming that it is a cassette as you mentioned a 74 fastback, ifso facto, a 5 cog cassette is what you are trying to remove, correct? :?

Yeah exactly right. They dont have one, thats why I ordered the fr4 in was only $8 I think the other one I have is a fr5 for shimano etc, I dont know the make of the freewheel, id assume its the factory one as everything else on it was/is original..... I cant see any numbers etc on it

This is gonna sound nutty, count the recesses in the cassette. Did you come up with 20? Now measure the widest area across (recess to recess) is it 1.25 (standard) or 32 mm metric? The reason I ask is, I went out to my toolbench and grabbed an FR-1 and below it was a bottom bracket tool for an ISIS type bottom bracket. The bottom bracket tool looks as though it would fit the cassette, given the measurements you provided (1 1/4") and it has 20 splines! The FR-1 is just shy of an inch, much like the tool you have already.

Something else you migt want to try is E-mailing that E-Bay seller and asking him what tool fits that cog.I am pretty sure that is Craig Morrow, he owns a bike shop as well. He would probably be happy to sell you one.

the inch and a quarter was just an eyeballometer measurement :) I think they did try a bb tool not 100% sure though thats a good idea to ask the ebay seller, ill count and measure it tomorrow, I gotta be up for work in 5 hrs  thanks for your help so far rick! ill post what I find soon as i find it lol

Every Schwinn Approved cluster I've removed takes an FR-4. I can't say for sure that I've had one that new but very close on the years.

Do you have it nice and clean so you can see what's going on in there? The splines are kind of deep inside on those and I just want to make sure you're not looking at globs of grease and rocks!

The only other cluster I've come across is the Shimano ones that require an FR-1. You're right, they're very similar diameter. Just took one apart a couple days ago for my Buildoff bike.

The FR-4 has more splines than FR-1. I don't know what you've got there, but the outer freewheel nut is usually stamped with the manufacturer. Is the hub a Schwinn Approved hub? Should be stamped on the center of the hub inside the wheel.

Just wondering if someone changed a wheel, but also not 100% sure that the hardware is the same between, say, my 71 Fastback and a 74.

Good luck!

I take all mine to Charlie at my local LBS (he has all the right tools)

He whips them off in 5 seconds (for free)

I agree, your local bike shop is the best place, but make sure they've been in business for a while. My local shop (Erlton Bike Shop) has been in business since 1971 and has a wide selection of tools from the old days that come in handy more often than you'd think. 8)

Like I said, please read above I already tried a few of my LBS thats also where I ordered the tool

Also,

I counted the splines, 24. and with my micrometer it is 1.25 inches across so 1 1/4 like I guessed

Hey Rob,

Yeah it is the factory correct date coded schwinn hub and s-5 wheel. Ive seen a few rear s-5's on ebay that have the same cog as mine.... The fr-4 was the only one listed in there book for schwinn's but its only about an inch across and yes its all clean, lil rusty but i scooped all the guck out and wipped it etc. EVERY bike shop around here all order there parts, tools, etc etc from Norco he lets me look through all his books (guess thats another sign im hooked and on a first name basis lol) and neither of us found anything

any new ideas?

Also I cleaned the shyte! out of the outside "ring" of the freewheel, it says "schwinn approved" and "france model f2" it looks like f2 but its hard to see

Please do not try to break my stones.

Im only trying to help ya out.

How often are ya gonna use that tool anyway?

Probably once, unless I get another schwinn wheel with the same freewheel, but regardless if no one around her has the tool I got no other choice but to buy one, I use my shimano one often enough to have it around. even still either way I have to pull it off as I need to relace a new hoop onto this hub

I always figured on having a minimum of three of each freewheel removing tools, just in case.
I know I have at least three Maillard tools, somewhere??????
If I got rid of one then I would only have two, and that would not do!
