Schwinn stem size?

The stem on my Varsity is trashed, so I tried to put a spare on but it was a little too big. I was told that Schwinn uses a Schwinn-specific size. Is this true? What size stem do I need to fit in my Varsity?

21.1mm or .833 inches. Post a want ad and somebody should have one.
