I have a bare Schwinn tandem frame. Did the tandems have heavier spokes than regular one-seater Schwinns? To use wheels off of a non tandem should I swap the spokes? Are the holes in the hubs big enough for heavier gauge spokes? What about the holes in the rims? Thanks. :?:

Yes. That's up to you, many people do not. No, and no. Anything else you want to know? :p Later & PEACE!!!!!

Schwinn tandems came stock with heavy duty spokes. Good modern alloy rims on well-tuned wheels should be sufficient for normal sized riders however. What's more important with a tandem is to make sure the brakes are adequate and have backup. Stopping twice the weight takes twice the distance often and typical tandem accidents include running into parked cars and at the far end of the safety spectrum "brake fade" accidents on hills where slowing or stopping control is completely lost.

Tandem wheels were prized by the "klunker" riders of the 1970s for the drum brakes and the he'avy duty spokes.
