Anybody happen to know what tire size would fit 27" s-6 Schwinn wheels without buying actual s-6 tires? I'm hoping there is an equivalent in some other sizing, like 700c or similar.

27" tires are 27" tires - in this case, the Schwinn tires are no different than the industry standard. There is only one 27" wheel size. So, any tires that say 27" on them (ISO 630) will fit. There are many, many choices. CST tires are cheap and come in many colors, I had white ones on my Raleigh for a while, and put a set on the Opaque Blue Suburban I recently sold. They looked good on the pale blue with white decals. I'm running Bontrager Hardcase tires on my Raleigh now after having a lot of flats last year. I've also use Kenda Cross tires, which are 1-3/8" wide and knobby, but they definitely roll slower. Kenda also makes road-tread gumwall tires that look passably like the original Schwinn tires in the 1-1/4" wide size. I've also seen 1-1/8" sizes as well.

Hi hi! Can we have a Schwinn tire sizing guide as a sticky? I've noticed these questions come up a lot.

A review, big-to-little, as far as bead-seat diameter:

27
s6-- 630mm. All tires marked 27" or 630mm will fit
26
s6-- 597mm. All 26" tires marked s6 or 597 will fit. (Schwinn called these 26x1 3/8", but many 590mm tires will be marked like this, too.)
s4--584. All 26" tires marked s4 or 584 will fit; most current tires this size will be marked "650b" or "27.5". (Schwinn, and some British manufacturers, called these 26x1 1/2")
s7-- 571. All 26" tires marked s7 or 571x45mm will fit. (Schwinn called these 26x1 3/4"; not the same as 26x1.75"--also, 650c time trial/roadie tires are also 571mm, but these tend to be too skinny for s7 rims, with sizes like 571x20c and 571x23c.)
s2--559. Basically all "normal" 26" tires will fit these, including mtb tires, modern cruiser tires, 26" hybrid tires, etc. Skinny slick 26" commuter tires will fit on the rim, but may roll off the bead on a typical fat s2 rim.
24
s5--547mm. All 24" tires marked s5 or 547 will fit. (Schwinn called these 24x1 3/8"; these are not the same as the British 24x1 3/8")
s2--507. All 24" tires marked 507 will fit; this includes the typical 24" BMX and/or cruiser sizes, from 1.5 to 2.125"
20
s6--451mm. All 20" tires marked 451 or s6 will fit. (eg,451mm BMX race tires, often marked as 20x1 1/8", 20x1 1/4", 20x1 3/8".) Schwinn called these 20x1 3/8".
s7--419. All 20" tires marked s7 or 419 will fit. (Schwinn called these 20x1 3/4"; these are not the same as 20x1.75" Stingray wheels, essentially.)
s2--406. Pretty much all the normal common modern 20" tires will fit, including most 20" BMX tires.
16-- Schwinn used 317mm tires on their 16" kiddie bikes. I am terrified of anything smaller than 20", and cannot even guess about other marque's 16" tires, or anybody's 12", etc....

I hope this helps; if anything's wrong with it, let me know so I can stop lying to ppl.

**Edited on 8/17 to add stuff.

maybe add the 20" s-6 451mm 20x1 3/8 and the 26" s-4 584mm 26x1 1/2. :)

FWIW we had a disbelieving customer storm out of the shop a few weeks ago after we informed him his 27" Schwinn tires were 'normal' and that we did indeed always have them in stock. I even offered to mount them on the spot....

Customers are crazy.

I'll add the 451s (thought I had em); but i never knew that 650b/584s were known as schwinn s4! Learn something new every day. What schwinn bike(s) came with s4 tires??

Where can I get some 27" whitewalls? Not that particular on the brand. Gary

Look on amazon.com - lots of choices there. I'll point out, though, that gumwalls are common, but I've never seen a whitewall in a 27" size. Never was looking either, though.

The Town and Country tandem ran that size, and then later in the 80's they used it again (for no apparent reason) on a narrow tire low end mtb. I forget what model, might have been one from their short lived hungarian factory venture. We sell 1, maybe 2 S-4s a year to VERY confused customers who have already been to kmart, walmart, big box shops, etc, etc...

They gotta be happy, now, with all of the fast slick 650Bs and all the awesome knobbie 27.5" mtb tires out there. Sell em some Grand Bois Hetres for the tandem, or some Pacenti Neo-Motos for their weird 80s mtb....
