With all the buzz around strandies these days I decided to build one for myself.
I LOVE the look of the classic 26 BMX bikes like Laguna or Cook Bros., but they aren’t in my budget right now.
What is in my budget is a frame from ind-chuckz. I wanted to do something different than a Worksman, so I started looking at the Schwinn Heavy Duti. It has the look I’m after, EXCEPT for the 1 1/8” headset components. After some research, it looks like the Summit Workhorse frame IS THE SAME FRAME, except it has 1” headset stuff.
BINGO!
So, hit up Chuck for a frame and, as usual, he delivered.
I ground off the rear rack and chainguard mounts, l’m leaving the bottle mounts.
Did a little ‘lead work’ on a small dent on the top tube and filled in the fender brace holes on the rear dropouts.
and that’s where we are....
I have been sourcing in the rest of the bits from my stash, other bikes, FB and members here.
Here’s what I have so far:
Using this Bell cruiser saddle from my first RRB build
I wanted to mix in a little MTB, BMX and roadie stuff (why not, right?)
So, I ordered this alloy seatpost with modern clamping hardware.
I wanted to try a 3pc crank conversion, so I went with this YST Professional unit with sealed cartridge bearings
My crankset is this ‘nod to a Schwinn cloverleaf’ unit I got from an RRB member years ago.
Pulled these brown Odyssey Twisted pedals off my path bike
Staying with sealed bearings, I ordered this headset.
For a stem, I’ve FINALLY found a build for this vintage BMX 4-bolt unit.
Scored these bars from a FB page, they’ll work for now
Found these brown ‘city’ grips in my stash
I decided I wanted a chrome fork that took a 22.2 stem, so I bought this ‘Schwinn replacement’ (most likely Sunlite) from eBay.
Wheels are from a modern Walmart Huffy, scored those from Kingfish254. I’m gonna ditch the peach and get them blasted and , budget permitting, get them powdercoated, maybe...I did replace the black rear cog with a shiny one.
The tires are 26 x 2.0 Continental RetroRides, stole those from the pathway bike too. If I paint the rims, I may try to match the color in their logos
For a chain, went with this Rustbuster
That’s what I got so far, I think that’s all I’ll need.
The plan:
Get the frame sandblasted and powdercoated ‘old Ford’ blue. Like in the logo. I hope to pick up an old F100 soon, so why not have a matching bike. Plus, I don’t own a blue bike. I’m gonna make this a ‘Schwinn’ so I’ve got some modern frame decals coming and I’m gonna use this headbadge that I got from Smoopy’s
This bike lived it’s first life in service at a Shell plant, so I may toss a ‘nod’ to that in there too.
Stay tuned.....
