shimano 3 speed problem

the other day I picked up a shimano 3 speed rim and shifter so I was looking at it today and decided to use it on the wifes bike but before I can i have to fix this

Any one have any ideas? It still shifts thru all three gears but as you can see the cable casing has issues

You might be able to just use brake line housing depending on which type of cable it is using.

Yes, there are little turnbuckles with a cable clamping screw on one end that allow you to use common shift cables.
