Fellow RatRodders,
Did this last year to break the winter doldrums. It is called, The Polar Bear Challenge." It is a chance to ride your motorcycle or, in my case, my motorized bicycle, on a really cold day, make a short vlog of it, note the temp at the start of the ride and at the end, note your mileage ridden and embed your video to the PBC site. When you have made at least three runs as 32º F or below, you will qualify for a PBC sticker. Last year, I only got two rides in, but, enjoyed watching all of the other participants videos. All motorized bikes will be in the "moped" class, me included. The challenge starts on Dec. 1st and runs all the way to Feb. 15th.
So, if you are up to a challenge, check out the site at: http://polarbearchallenge.ning.com/, and lets get some RatRod bikes in the mix.

Good luck,
Robert

-2 degrees down the road in Butte (Montana) this morning. Why wait until December?? Oh, I'm breaking out the Flyer and getting it ready for my new PBC sticker :D :D :D

XC, if I were to ride in the conditions that your pic shows, I'd have to have some awfully gnarly lugged tires. So, looks like you are in on the "PBC" too. Since the Flip is not being manufactured anymore, there might be some great deals out there. The wife bought a lower end HD flip off the display at Target for $25 bucks.

Robert those are cool videos no pun intended. My tires are Nokian Hikapelia 106's 106 carbide studs not that aggressive a pattern had some 294 stud ones that were like riding on velcro tires with the bare road being the other part they are mainly for black ice up here. last winter we rode through our worst blizard in years and some -20 days those are crisp! A friend at work plows the path between towns with his bike we help when the going gets rough. There are 4 of us in Geneva that work at Fermilab in Batavia and ride every day Fridays are my Ratrod bike days the knees can't take every day on the oldies.

Waiting for Clancy to see this thread.

I think Gary may have me beat. I have ridden in -10 F before and he is at -20F. But the studded tires definitely are the ticket for icy conditions. Now I just need to figure out which bike to mount them on this year.

A YouTube biker friend of mine, Suburbanryder, brother-in-law works for Fermilab. Had to keep an sharp eye out for the slick spots, rode with a full helmet and face shield though.

I found out the guys name that works at Fermilab, it is, Jim Hylen, he is working on the Minos experiment. Hope that helps.
