I have 2 26X3 36 spoke rims and I'm purchasing a Shimano Nexus 3 speed hub. I'm building the entire wheel and need recommendations for the size of spokes I need as well as a recommendation for a front hub. This is the first time I've built a wheel myself. I've taking apart a wheels to paint the rims in the past, but all the parts already came together. I am ordering everything separately this time and want to make sure I get the right things when I order them.

Which rims, exactly, do you have? Brand/model name?

Finding the right length spoke is easy, if you have the hub and rim at hand or if you know their given measurements. Once you measure the effective rim diameter, flange diameters, and center-to-left/center-to-right flange measurements, you plug all that into an online spoke calculator. (Many calculators will have the specs for common rims/hubs saved.) choose your spoke lacing pattern/# of spokes (I'd suggest 3cross), it'll give you the exact ideal spoke length.

Also, I just got some 13g spokes and they seem to have a nice balance between being beefy but still fitting in most standard hubs/rims. If your rime are drilled to take HD spokes, that might be a factor in ordering both hubs and spokes.

PS-If you want top save money, find a front hub that will use the same length spokes as the Nexus. there were different flavors of Nexus hubs, but an example would be that the Nexus sg-3c41 will use the same spokes as a Sturmey-Archer HBT front, assuming both are 36h and laced 3cross into identical rims. This will save you some coin....

I picked up a Shimano Nexus 4, from somebody on RRB and a 2" wide 20" rim new from classic cycle overseas. It was for my Muscle Bike Build-off, BOSS Sting-Ray. Since I haven't ever spoked a wheel and didn't have time to learn during this build-off, I turned to the local bike shops. The first one I went to didn't know what to do with the rim, couldn't find it on any spoke calculators. They had it for two weeks with no results, not good during a build-off. The second bike shop I went to was great, he said all he needed was a hub and rim with the same number of holes! I got it back in less than a week.

I found my new favorite bike shop!
