Springer forks on a 24 x 3?

Has anyone been able to rig traditional Schwinn-style springer forks over a 24 x 3 front tire/rim? I was told by the LBS that it isn't possible, but I think it is. Is 1/4 or 1/8 inch clearance on each side enough? Does anyone have any suggestions or pics?

I saw a build on here recently where someone did it without modifying the fork. Let me look around a bit...
