Another enjoyable evening in the garage tinkering with my bikes. Lubed the chain and cleaned my Kawasaki KLR 650 ready for work tomorrow and set about fiddling with the toys.

The Cruiser didn't need much doing to it. The chain guard needs a bit of alignment because it's not the original crank set and I had to jigger a bracket to make it fit at all. It needs setting to with the tin snips but it's not urgent. Other than that I'm just enjoying it. Loving the Boxkars stick shift. Adds a level of enjoyment.
Dog exercise, leisure rides and cruising by the bay.

My 'Scrambler' has been de-scrambled ... again. The knobby tyres were seeing too much tarmac/too little dirt and I wasn't enjoying the vibes off them, then, when I put the balloon road rubber back on the buckles and bows in the wheels became really obvious - so I tried truing them myself - and promptly broke a few corroded nipples. I didn't like the wheels anyway - they were mismatched. One was replaced a while ago - destroyed by removalists when we shifted house and one had had some big hits and was really out of whack. I could have bought a whole new bike with what I've thrown at it recently, but now it has new Rockshocks forks and, as of this evening, new Halo Combat wheels that are much wider and will accommodate the 2.125x 26 rubber better. Happy with them fo sho.
I'm still waiting for a front disc brake kit to arrive by post. (That I ordered from the same shop at the same time as the wheels - which arrived three days ago. In mostly empty cartons). Frustrating much? When I started this project nobody was marketing 'hybrid' bikes. Now it seems I'm gunna have a nice one. It started life as a basic Kona MTB.
It's the 'grocery getter'.

The Kos Kruiser has a new Redline 'old school' chain ring because I bent the original 40t stocker and then fitted a 44t which I didn't like much. BAck to 40T. Also a new lay-back MTB seat post fits better. Lightweight 606 alloy. And some new stickers (very important dontchaknow). Loving the feel of the Hookworm rubber and the light simplicity of the bike.
It's for doing stupid stuff and I often spend a session just jumping off all the gutters and driveways going 3 times around the block - just for the hell of it. The Oxford saddle is very comfortable for such a compact unit too.

I'd still like a 29'er as a new project, but I've blow the budget on forks, wheels, brakes and shifters for a while. Which means I probably should stop carrying on about my bikes and do some work now :)

I ditched the old school speedometer on the cruiser today. It was on there for 'fun' and that I like having an odometer on the bike so I can keep an eye on how far I'm exercising the dog, but the noise it was starting to make (it was only junk) was giving me the 'irrits'.
Back to the Garmin Edge 200. It's a bit more hi-tech than the stylez of the rest of the bike ... but they are a very good thing. If you want a Speedometer, odometer and record keeper on your ride I highly recommend. Works pretty good on the mount I made for the analogue speedo and tidies up the front end from having all those cables that were hanging out too.

I got the Kona back together and it turned out it wasn't just the rims that were buckled, but also the Duro 26 x 2.125 balloon tyres. If you are a super-heavyweight like me I'd be a bit circumspect about the fat Duro rubber. Even on the brand new Halo Combat (true) rims they were kicking and hopping around. Maybe it was because they were originally on rims that were probably too narrow, but they were well bent and when I removed them chunks of the bead broke off.

So I re-fitted the knobbys that were originally on the Kos, and ordered some Halo H Blocks. No, I haven't become some sort of 'Halo fan-boy', just that these seem to suit my purpose rather well. An off-road capable white wall with 'claimed' minimal vibration for pavement use. We'll see. They are in transit from my favoured online retailer as I type.

Meantime I'm really enjoying the bike. The front disc brake on the compression and rebound damping adjustable Rockshox forks has transformed the bike's comfort levels. As has a better lay-back seat post.

The brake conversion is one I've seen recommended in threads on here before. It's the Hayes MX5 kit. Comes with caliper, disc and cable. Very good. Took a day to bed in and now it's a good stopper. The v-brake on the back works fine on the fat Halo rims too. Cable was *just* long enough

New wheels, skewers, funky mini spotlights - and I've got some more 'fruit' on the way for it too. Updates to follow:

Looks to be pretty well sorted!

Luke.

Yah mate. The only things left from the original bike are the Frame, gearset and back brake. Everything else has been changed out. But that's the hobby innit. And it's a lot cheaper than motorcycles. I spent more on Ohlins shocks for my Triumphs than all my pedal bikes have cost me ever. :)

All of them look well sorted. Cruiser is nice but shouldn't the shifter be on the other side?

KLR looks well loved. I just sold my TW200, 6 years and 8k but it was time for a change...bit sad..

Painted the guards/fenders on the Kona today and it's looking pretty good for a 14 year old bike (well frame anyway):

Ordered some new stickers/graphics for it too - should look something like this:

Changed the 'livery' on the Electra too. It's now called the 'Seven Eights'.

The aforementioned favoured online retailer messed up though. I ordered Halo H-Block whitewall tyres for the Kona and what turned up were white tyres with black sidewalls. I was about to organise returning when I put them down next to the Kos and thought ... too late to return them now! Looks way cool. I might even stick a white chain on it:

I'll get some black H blocks for the Kona when the knobbys wear out. The way they are going it won't be that long.

Got the camera out on the bikes today with the intention of finding a calendar shot.

But first the new Halo twin rail tyres for the Kona arrived this morning and they are really good - so far. After living with those heavy knobbys the bike feels so smooth now. I like the dual compound idea - hard middle - softer edges - a lot of my motorcycle tyres have been like that. If you are looking for a balloon that runs well on tarmac and can handle a bit of off road too - these are nice. Quite light and also puncture resistant.
I got them here:

The look pretty good.

I think I'm calling this project done, although I've said that several times before. It's riding very sweetly now.

Then later tonight I went down the Bayside with my accomplice looking for a calendar angle (he had a nice swim too). I posted my favourite in the top thread.
I thought these came up reasonable well.

And this afternoon through a polarising filter

The pad set on the Kos was starting to get grubby so I bought a sticker set for the frame. It needs some better brake pads next but is riding real well. I'm digging the new white bits.
