Looks like the Motobikes(derny) help the track bikes(Stayer) around a track or on a course. The Stayers have crazy big chainrings, 24" front wheels and 700c rear wheels. The Dernys look a little like some old board trackers.

Really cool pictures. Somehow I would rather be the one with the motor. You know there had to be one heck of a temptation to slam on the brakes. :?

reminds me of when I was a racer, and I was on Martha's Vineyard training... I drafted a tourist's moped for 20 miles. they were shocked when every few miles they looked back and saw I was still there. I had to wait in Edgarton for the guys I had been riding with for like 20 minutes. Drafting is so much fun, makes you feel superhuman.

I've seen some videos of those races, too. A couple of oddities about it- for the dierny driver, it is advantageous if he is fat, and if he sticks his elbows and knees out (note the last photo there)- the more UNaerodynamic he is, the bigger the draft for the bicyclist! And then on the bicycles, they would shorten up the front end as much as possible (smaller wheel, steeper headtube) just so the rider was closer to the dierny for a better draft.
