I have an old Monkey Wards bike (aka Murray) lightweight that I'm rebuilding. It has 26"x 1 3/8" tires and I wanted to change the stem and handlebars. I was given a beautiful aluminium Cinelli stem off of a Puch bike but when I pulled the stem from the Murray and measured the two, of course they wouldn't fit. The Cinelli appears to have a quill that measures 23 mm wide and the Monkey Wards/Murray quill appears to be 7/8" or 21 mm wide. Am I measuring the quill diameter wrong on the Murray? Did they make 7/8" diamter stems or is it really a 1" stem?
