OK guys and girls, a quick.refresher for some, totally new news with the wife and her daughter.
First off my creditials, won the bicycle rodeo starting in the 3rd grade, kept winning until jr. High.
Got my bicycle merit badge from the boyscouts at 13.
Started working in shops that year, was the helper, went to all shop events, including bicycle safety courses usually sponsored by the police.
That put me in touch with AAA, who have excellent data.
Schwinn school even gave us a run down on proper stopping technique!
So with no further ado;

Coaster brake stopping.
Always, left or right handers, get off the bike on the left.
Always stop pedaling with the right pedal back.
Always stop using your right foot to press backwards.
As you roll to a stop simply extend your left foot out, place it on the ground as you stop. Simple!

Notice, no where did I say stand to stop. I never said jump off and crash into dad's behind and bruise his back theres! (When I can run again my daughter is dead?)
Yup, been having a little time with my lefty daughter, she is determined she will not ride coaster brake. I am determined she will never have another mtb to let be stolen.

Head on a swivel when riding, never stop looking, and never be afraid of stopping.
