someone once told me it worked. has anyone ever tried using cola to remove chrome? it sure seems a lot safer than muratic acid.. :?

I myself have never used Cola or Muratic acid , if you talking about removing rust ?
try Citric acid or plain ole concentrated Lemon Juice, very safe ....Unless you get it in your Eyes

Never heard of using Cola to REMOVE chrome, but it will CLEAN chrome very nicely, especially if you rub it with a ball of aluminum foil while pouring Cola over it.

he said it takes a couple days, I have muratic acid {bad stuff) but I am gonna try the coke on my rat trap book rack. the chrome is flaking so i want it rusty instead. we'll see if its true.. :|

Look at a Coke label. Phosphoric acid is one of the main ingredients. It's real weak so that's why it takes so long. Gary

Perfect solution, cheap and safe to put your hands in - White Vinegar. Buy a tote the size you need from Wal Mart and submerge the rack in White Vinegar. When the Vinegar turns black in a few days you are done. You may want to use gloves to remove the parts because the vinegar will turn your skin black also. If all of the chrome has not disappeared the first time just stick it back in the vinegar. Big Bonus for you, when you pull it out there will be nothing but bare metal where the chrome was - don't dry it and it will start rusting immediately. Take some before and after pics and post them here. Have Fun! Robert

I've used vinegar to remove rust, but I've never seen it remove the chrome too. You are right, the resulting liquid stains like a son of a gun.

When I pull working parts out of vinegar (chains) I then move them to some mix fuel for my weed eater, the gas removes the settled sediment and the oil lubes it. Vinegar is great for rusty chains.

uhh, vinegar will eat the metal before it eats the chrome. check out these forks a guy forgot about in vinegar..

the viniger trick does work i picked up a stem that was badly rusted i placed it in some white vin.. i actually forgot about it a few days later i pulled it out and all the chrome was at the bootom of the tube i used... it gave it a raw pitted metal look i liked alot.. might clear it ...

The Vinegar attacks the rust.

White Vinegar attacking rust is originally why I started using it. But I forgot a pair of saddle springs and that was my first experience with chrome removal. Now if I have a part that's partially rusted but still has some chrome I'll strip it down to bear metal and then SAND it with Crocus Cloth and it polishes the bare metal better than anything I've ever used - I like the look of shiney bear metal. Clear coat it and you're done! Robert

i heard about the cola stripping chrome as well about 4 years ago....i wasted a 2 litter bottle trying to get a 3" test section of handle bars stripped....well....lets just say after 2 weeks of sitting in it...myth busted!
didnt do squat for taking chrome off(these were chinese made so the chrome wasnt even good!)
drink your soda and use an abrasive to get rid of the chrome

I've used coke to clean coins, dunno about chrome

and an onion to take rust off knives, try getting a set of bars into an onion though.
I suppose you could run a bag of onions through a juicer
but it can pit the metal.

Chrome is very tough (that is why it is used). The acidic liquids like vinegar and Coca Cola attack the softer "substrates" like copper, nickle, steel wherever it can reach it.
