Sheldon Brown on the ostensibly perplexing subject of tire sizing. The bottom line – never mix fractional with decimal tires, the rim diameters are unequal.

I build stuff.
I saw some of those 16 x 1 1/2 tires in Amish Country, they use that size on some of their scooters. Like everyone else, pay attention, only in the bike world is .5 not equal to 1/2.
