Hey guys,

So ive never taken apart a sturney 3 spd. but i got one that wont do nothin, pedal and you might as well be pedalling backwards :? cycle through the gears and nothin... is this a normal, easy fix? what goes wrong with them? are parts still available? its dated 79.

Thanks guys

Ty

I've got a SA 79 S3C, won't catch first gear. The old lube has hardened and the pawls aren't catching, so it slips or doesn't catch at all. I hit it with PB blaster and it helped a little, but it needs taken apart, cleaned, relubed, and reassembled. I've been putting that off, I might let the LBS do it when I need that hub.

He's probably correct about the old lube being dried up. I load them up with PB or WD40 then operate them, working through the gears to loosen them up. If that does the trick, I let em drain real good, then lube with Dextron trans fluid, 20 drops per month, since mine get used regularly. Trans fluid is high in detergent and helps clean them out and keeps them clean.

sweet good to know ill have to give that a try and see what happens, its on a raleigh thats looks to have been sitting outside for a while so your prob right its all dried up. if ?I do need to disassemble and clean it is it no big deal? fairly straight forward? im a millwright so im not scared of it just never taken a 3 spd apart before :p

so i filled er up with wd pedaled it both ways, cycled thru the gears was just about to give up then BAM! bike took off lol did it a few more times, it was puking rusty wd out so im guessing it got wet or was sitting out side for a while... its not rusty wd40 coming out now just looks dirty old grease now... but it seems to work the cable is somewhat seize so i cant tell 100% but with it on the stand pedalling and pulling the chain it seems to shift now, but should i disassemble it and clean and grease it?

Thanks guys,

Ty
