I know if I were just a new person ,looking to gain some insight on how to spend a lot of my money on bike building, and I joined Ratrodbikes I'm not sure I would know to post an intro. When there were just a thousand or so people on here It was pretty easy to make a suggestion that a new person post in the intro section. Now that it way up there and growing by leaps and bounds ,Its hard to know who has posted an intro or not. In my opinion it would be better for everybody to put where they live, under their avatar than to post.....Hi I'm new to the site and I love bikes and have a few and will post pics later. DUH! . Now this is just my opinion ,and someone would wonder why we care. Its so easy when you sell your prewar hooptido ,for everyone to see your in Iceland and shipping will make a purchase from you out of the question. Maybe it will help you sell it because someone that wants it may be from Iceland too. He will look at his avatar and then yours and see its just what he wants and it's close.

if my feeble brain hasnt faded out too much i recall it used to be when you signed up that you need to post an intro...
its all too help each other......its easy to say im from "_____"
that way if youre looking for parts or people to ride with it narrows it down(as does posting a link to your intro.....search hoochs posts for that link)....... and dont get me started on multiple threads for the same thing....we have a search function for just that reason(ohhhhh.....wait that should be in the ticks me off thread )

btw never take me serious......always think of me with a grain of salt :p

To me, the real reason for posting an intro is to help protect the board from spammers or people who are only here to sell their products. Usually these types won't take the time to fill out an intro and move on. I know that I hate reading a first time post from a new member and finding the post to be nothing more than a sales ad. Intros are the easiest way to filter "unwanteds" out but not the only way.

As far as posting an intro, they're only as truthful as the keyboard and it's operator wants it to be. Why should a person have to let everyone know where they live or what their other interests are. The main point is they're here, they're contributing to their hobby and they're learning about others with the same interests. Most of the members do actually end up posting where they're from and their other interests anyway. But for those who don't, oh well. Just cause we don't know where they're from or that they like long lonely walks on the beach in the middle of December, doesn't mean that they don't have something to offer the board.

Alot of times a very interesting topic gets sidetracked by someone worrying wehether or not the person has posted an intro. Give it a rest, you're not looking for a prom date! If a new member wants to do an intro, fine. If not, fine. If they're here to be a part of our hobby, that's what counts. OOhs and ahhs are just as appreciated as long winded babble about the contents of the topic!

For those members who are selling something, wouldn't they just post their address anyway? I know that if I was selling something internationally, I'd make sure that I posted the price and where i live so thast potential buyers could figure the total price before purchase. And just because they live in Hayfield, South Washigton doesn't mean that's where the product is being shipped from. Also, isn't there a special section for selling/trading?

After all my babble the bottomline is ... you don't need to know where I live, what my favorite color is or who's my favorite superhero. All you need to know is, that I enjoy what this board is about.
Just my opinion,
Chainsaw

you tell 'em chainy! :D i guess it should be an option for people to post personal stuff. but i think the thing was it'd be like:
hi, my name is bob.
-everybody say hi-
hi bob!
i uh.. i like bikes.
-clapping-
and i think it puts the other members into perspective what kind of people they are, so you dont offend them, or just get along better. it makes others seem more human. :D

<---------------I put mine on over here

But I dont mind people knowing where I live, the bad guys will figure it out if they search hard enough anyways. If they wanna steal my bike... they're gonna get a black eye.

I can see the other side though... some people just want to remain anonymous and thats cool I suppose, but yeah if your buying and selling it helps to know the city and state.

they dont need to post there name, age, gender, political affiliations, religious beliefs, location,or anything else....
even if they post i like bikes, cool board, hello, or something

now that i look back it used to be posted when you signed up for an account it said to post an intro and yeah i did because i lurked for a long time and when i did finally log on i didnt want to get booted from the best site id found.
but whatever.......theres been alot of people who post looking for stuff to buy or sell without an intro and i know i wouldnt deal with anyone thats first post is want ads
thats all ill say about this(I PROMISE  )

The blank location bugs me the most. I live in the Indy area but use Indy as my location since it is so close by. I get the sense that there are folks who think this puts them at risk. Location should be mandatory. At minimum post the largest city within 30 miles of you. As mentioned for purchasing decisions, it makes the choice easier whether to buy or not. Or perhaps you could actually pick up the item or know a friend who would.

Oh, let's see. I love sunset walks on the beach. I love to lounge on a shag carpet in front of a crackling fireplace. Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens... you know... ALL THAT STUFF!

Oops wrong forum.
