The Art of the Bicycle When an everyday object becomes art…

They are everywhere. From the everyday ‘Barbie’ pink bike, to the ultra sophisticated racing machine we see around town. So common that almost everyone in America either owns or has owned one. Learning to ride a bicycle is a rite of passage during childhood. Bicycles are so as ordinary and everyday and yet their shape, elegance and movement have inspired artists for decades. The ArtCentre of Plano is proud to exhibit ‘The Art of the Bicycle’ from June 20 – August 1, 2009, with North Texas artists, Kelly Berry, Todd Gutmann and Janet Karam. The opening reception for this exhibition will be Friday evening, June 19th from 6-8 pm and is open to the public.

Photographer, Kelly Berry, was inspired by bicycles on his trips to Europe. “The commuters in Europe, the thousands of bikes parked at Amsterdam Central Station, the local racers at the Tuesday night Criterium in Plano, and the professional stunt riders who thrill the crowds all have a visual story to tell. My goal is to capture the essence of them all on film and pixels.”

Todd Gutmann has been painting in the Dallas area for more than 15 years. Known for his sports-themed work, his pieces are in the private collections of some well-known sports icons. In this current exhibition, Gutmann captures the frenzy of bike races in a unique contemporary approach.

After graduating from the Art Institute of Dallas, Janet Karam soon realized her passion for creating fine art was far greater than her interest in commercial art, and began developing an expressive style all more true to her calling. Karam’s art demonstrates a celebration of the arts as they relate to life. Her abstract bicycle series originated in 2008, and has added an exciting new urban dimension to her growing body of work.

Along with the exhibition, the ArtCentre plans to work with local bike shops to create a stop at the ArtCentre for their weekday and Saturday rides. There is also a bike safety day being planned for the kickoff of the exhibition and the ArtCentre’s summer arts program JumpStart for Arts. More information about these events is soon to come.

Every summer the ArtCentre works to create an exhibition that families will enjoy and be inspired by. The hope for this exhibition, The Art of the Bicycle, is that children and adults will begin to be inspired by the art all around them in their everyday lives. Don’t miss this unique exhibition. Make it apart of your summer plans.
