Re: The Flying V - JC Higgins Boardtracker (logo designed)

I got a wildhair today and decided to try to make a custom head badge out of .007" thick brass shim stock, and it actually turned out nice. I drew the design of it on the shim stock with a pen and put it on a soft paperback book and beared down hard after I had it drew on there. After I got the outline done, I took the pen and started embossing iy with straight horizontal lines. I realized pretty quickly that I had to work from the center out retain the curved shape. I actually believe I could do it better a second time after seeing where to emboss the brass to make it shape how I wanted. It was a PITA to do, so I'm not doing it again! -lol Now I've got find a way to age the brass without removing too much of the black paint. Here's a few pics of it:

Re: The Flying V- JC Higgins Boardtracker -Custom headbadge made

Test fitted it today to an old Schwinn frame and it fits pretty good. I will probably attach it the JC Higgins frame with thin 2 sided tape. I am afraid to try to put holes it.

Re: The Flying V- JC Higgins Boardtracker -Custom headbadge made

Thanks! I have been dipping it in salt\vinegar water and letting it dry for the last 2 days and it is slowly turning darker are developing spots of green patina. I will post some pics of it aged as soon as I get done with it.

Re: The Flying V- JC Higgins Boardtracker -Custom headbadge made

Well, I suceeded in aging the headbadge. It looks like its been the weather for 80 years or so right? -lol I kept dipping it a saltwater/vinegar solution and taking it out to dry. It was slow getting starting, but it once it started oxidizing it started darkening more and more. I was able to get it to darken more rapidly if I blowdried it enough to get get it hot once I took out of saltwater/vinegar. The green patina came from letting it air dry slowly

My wife had a few questions on the subject:
1.) WHY DOES THE BATHROOM SMELL LIKE VINEGAR???

2.) WHO HAS BEEN MESSING WITH MY BLOW DRYER??? (I left the little diffuser thingy on the end of it)

3.) So, you sat there forming, shaping, cutting, painting, and polishing this thing just so you could make it look like it came out of a junk yard??? There's something wrong with you!

Its safe to say that she doesn't get the art of patinafication! -lol

Bravo on that badge!!!

My wife and I took a little spin this evening, and I decided to ride the Flying V. It rides good as long you don't want to sit down! -lol
But it is rideable, so it meets the RRBBO8 rules criteria! My wife is enjoying her new Huffy Deluxe Cruiser. It is a pretty cool looking bike for a Chinese crusier.

What's been happening in V-Land?

Life, work and everything in between got in the way of finishing this bike, but I I pulled it out of the garage this weekend and was looking at it thinking I need to jump back on this thing and finish it!
