shifter

What kind of shifter is that mounted under the tank? Looks great, I like those bars.

thanks the shifter is a nexus 7 triger shifter. real fun to use think bang shifter like race cars use. when the shifter is done it will be hidden inside the tank and the shift lever will come up through the top of the tank and have a one of glass shift knob.

i forgot to tell the story of this bike so here it goes

i am the original owner i bought it in 1998 when i was full swing into vintage bikes but wanted one to ride everyday. after buying it this bike became my rolling accesory collection rare bells, a siren, old script grips, NOS delta horn, mudflaps with two AAA car emblems, as well as a ton of vintage glass reflectors. it was a sight and yea maybe a bit over done. anyways over the years i have put about 2800 miles on her then when i moved from sac to elk grove with in a month someone decided to kick in my garage door and stoll her. i was crushed and nervious because they left behind all my other bikes. i searched high and low contacted all shops, watched CL and ebay like a crack addict hoping just a peice of her would show up.
then one day my father told me he saw a guy on a bike that looked a lot like mine but it was missing a bunch of the stuff. he stoped the guy and told him he thought the bike was stollen and the guy took off in a way that my dad could not give chase. after that i figured all hope was lost because now the guy knew something was up and would probably sell it or turn it into some sort of low rider.
about a month after that i was driving to work and saw the guy on my bike as well. i turned around sped up and slowed next to him. the thought ran through my head just to run him off the road and take the bike back but 1. i was in my tiny saturn and i knew it would not fit, and 2. this was not the sort of part of town where it would be a good idea for a skiny white boy to try and punk a big mexican dude for his schwinn. he was actually a kinda nice guy i tried to explain that it was my bike and oh yes it was i put every damn scratch that was on it as well as knowing the serial on the frame. he wanted no part in that so i asked him where he got it and he said a place called bike builders which i figured as they buy stollen bikes all the time even if they know it is hot. he did not want to go back and try to get his money back and i get my bike back so i got his cell number and took off. he was all over his cell phone calling his buddies and things were starting to turn nasty.
WHEW still with me guys? time goes by i think now all hope has to be lost as to getting the bike back and one day going home i see the damn thing sitting out in front of a store. i flip around a side street, park and walk around seeing if anyone is close. there she was sitting literally in the middle of the sidewalk UNLOCKED!!!!! i walk slowly up to it take one look to make sure he is nowhere near and jump on stealing it back lol. trouble was he broke the shifter and it was stuck in 6th so getting going sucked. the whole irony is that he parked it two blocks from my dad's house so i just took it back over there walked back got in my car and went along my way. i called the police later telling them i found the bike and took it back. he said good for you!!!! it has been almost a year since then and it really took a lot to turn her into a custom but i just could not let her stay like that she was ..... lol. the fenders got trashed and it had a crapy set of whitewalls on as well as the rare one year only shifter being broken beyond repair. so now she is reborn and seems much happier. heres to another 3000 or so miles :D

:D That's a great look karfer, kinda got that "vintage"
look with the black and cream. When you say old style
nexus hub what do you mean?

it really took a lot to turn her into a custom

Great story! I think most of us wish our stories ended like that. I'm still looking for a couple that got stolen last Sept..My wife gets mad every time I slow down in the car to stare...But any way, I know what you mean by "it really took a lot to turn her into a custom" check out "1st pic old friend" and "up dating and old friend" in the gallery . I think its for the better!

i have seen the bike outsider and yes i agree with you much better. to answer the nexus question most of the new ones have a three peice shell with the spoke flanges pressed on. this one (made in 1998) has a one peice milled aluminum body and these shift more smoothly and i think look better as well. it is weird when you look in a parts book both are still avalible but you never know which one you will get. i wish the original shifter had not gotten wrecked it is super rare one year only and i have never seen another for sale. the whole thing is polished aluminum stock.

I love it!

You've done a great job with this one! I especially like the shortened handlebars... they look great.

yea i even shed a few tears writing the history of this bike. i wanted to do her right and once all done i will be happy. i really like these bars they are even more narow than the ones on the higgins by almost an inch. i still don't know who stoll the bike originally i don't think it was the guy who had it he just made the mistake of not working with me. i know he got it from the shop i mentioned because after i got it back i went over there asking if anyone had sold them a 7. they said no and i took a look around and found the seat that was on it when it got stollen. oh well in the end it all worked out for the better and yes death to all that steal bikes or parts for that matter. i can't tell you how many sets of dice valvestem caps i have lost on my bikes over the years.

VERY NICE!

Just catching up on some posts from others topics and ran across this gem! WOW! Very well executed! I really enjoy mixing styles to come up with new themes/multiple themes within a project. It parallels the evolution of different styles of music. In a nutshell it's called PROGRESS! or as I remember in college at the dinner line when a new dish was being served it was called a "Trend Setter". Board Track style with the gently flowing frames looks so COOOL@! Much better than the triangle frames. Kudos to a sweet looking ride!

thanks for the comments i am glad you all like it so much. and a big thanks to yeshoney for seeing what i was really trying to do with this bike. don't get me wrong i love tall bars but i like to build bikes that break the mold doing things i have never seen before. i think boardtrack motorcycles are just so beautifull to look at i like to pay tribute to them in my own designs. there is a lot of mixing new and old with this bike the old style frame, painted wheels, old patina seat. as well as new with the double crown fork, threadless setup, and 7 spd hub. thanks to all for the coments this is just the beginning

BTW

By the way, this is mine in case you missed it. I posted it awhile ago under a bad title.

Now if we could span the two coasts and get someone with photshop abilities to two cut and paste these in front of a Deli in NYC during the 30's, that would be COOL!

Keep Trackin"~

that would be cool call it gangs of NY. oh yea and i lived in queens for three years so i know what you are talking about :D

Wow

Wow!!!

This Schwinn and the JC Higgins...sweet.

Your the master karfer 8)

thanks for the kind words i am no master i just like to push the limmits and build bikes i have never seen done before. i think the whole idea behind kustom bikes is to stay progressive rather than just build cookie cutter bikes. although i will say i love tall bar bikes as well and maybe i need to do that next just to change things up a bit

just thought i would resurect this bike for anyone out there that has had a bike stollen. keep up the faith sometimes they come back.
