Alternate reality check: What if Schwinn would have tried to make some changes to the Manta Ray to boost its sales instead of killing it off in 1972? Maybe it would have looked something like this in the 1973 Schwinn catalog:

Of course, if Schwinn had really built a Manta Ray II, it would be listed in contemporary collectors’ books such as Geoff Greene’s excellent Sting Rays and Muscle Bikes of the 1960s and 1970s. Drawing on this book for inspiration, I wrote an entry for the fictional Manta Ray II. If you happen to have the book, the format will look familiar to you:
