Scavenger Hunt Build-off?

Build a bike using only what you already have to either build the bike or trade for other things to build it with.
Find thing in your local CL barter, landfill, neighborhood, local clubs could swap things.
Possibly a small allowance to purchace paint, tubes, other materials but keep it real cheap ($25?)

Dunno, I think it would be neat to see what kind of things everyone comes up with when keeping it cheap.

Maybe someone could come up with a list of regulation parts they must have?

Just a thought. Anyone else dig it?

Hmm, 'keep it cheap'
...Isn't that the whole point of ratrodbike-building? I may be wrong but I think more than 90% of the members here are building on a tight budget, using what they have and in most cases fabricate whatever is missing.

I think for the most part you are exactly right, however I also know first hand that some of us are single guys that can jump when the jumpin is good! So for some of us "spoiled members" I think a low budget bike build would be a challenge! I think it would be a very hard topic to monitor though.

yep...
...and then there's this: Some people are allready loaded with parts and have lots cool stuff in their collection. Heck, there are guys that can build 10 bikes out of the parts they have collected over the years. So it would be really difficult to keep it 100% fair... Besides, look at the builds from ALL of the previous build-offs. Almost all of them are budget build. Even the winners... I think, in the end there won't be too much of a difference between the outcome of a 'budget'-build-off and a 'regular' build-off...

I don't wat to rain on somebodys parade because I like the attitude of keeping the build cheap. That's what I do.
And that is exactly what Ratrodbike dot com is all about, imho.

Ok, so maybe in the true form of scavenger hunt, there could be a list of things that one would have to incorporate into their build.
like using certain objects on the bike in whatever way you see fit.
It might be neat to see the way that each person uses various items.

Just a thought, I woke up and posted before really giving the topic much thought.

What about starting a buildoff with very little prior notice and running it for 2-3 weeks tops.
For example; Steve would post today saying a buildoff is starting Wednesday and ending 3 weeks from that day.

I built my huffy rat like that, traded a trash find Haro for the bike, paid $6 for paint, made the rack out of an old scooter I had laying around, whiskey flask was a garage sale 25 cent item, little leather from my neighbor's old couch, seat was a freebie, oh and the antique lock was a $5 flea market find........looks darn good considering. You'd be surprised how many people thing it's an old Schwinn...lol.

You guys always competing always jumping on more build offs. It sounds like your all running for class president here    .

I'm for the " Official Unofficial Build On Anything You Want ". No special threads all in one place, no blogs, no facebook, no asking opinions from others, just build a bike and run a thread like the old days. Galtbacken has the right idea, he like some others build a nice bike at their on pace. That's a build off.

Graylock is a downer

i liked the anything goes one, where the only limit was time. too many rules and people might get knocked out unintentionally. like if there's some money rule and you happen to come across some doodad that would work perfect on whatever you're doing but it cost more than some set limit. or you have a frame idea but there's some frame rule that knocks you out. do you try and win or build the bike you want that'll last past the contest?

leave the long rule lists to the official buildoffs, and let the unoffiacial ones be more free.

oops... er... um.... let me change that.

there is a builf off idea i'd like to see that would require a few rules, even though i don't think i could play in it.

i mentioned in another thread, that contest on a fixie forum where you had a set list of groceries and you had to build a bike to carry them as if you rode the bike to the grocers. i'm too close to being done with one (and i've shown it already so i can't get away with convincing anyone i just started it), so i'd just be a spectator, but i think that would make an interesting buildoff.

For a couple of months I was kicking around an idea of using a Cardio Glide and building a Burrito using the 1 by 2 tubing for the frame. Using the most of the defunct exerciser for a bike.

How about a "purist's nightmare" buildoff? Other than seatpost and bearings/races, no 2 parts from the same brand or type of bike. And no, you can't just paint your existing ride.
