I need help selecting a replacement headset for my Murray built Spaceliner-style bike. I say -style because it's not a Sears serial number.

I have a 1" (25.4) steering tube with 1"-24 threads, a 7/8" stem (quill-type) and the crown diameter is 1" (25.7 measured).

What is "cup diameter" and how is it measured? Smallest inside diameter of the race cup? ID of the head tube?

Lastly, what headset do you guys with space-era Murrays use?

Wald #4080.... or search out an old Murray oem unit. The rest of the 1" threaded will be too narrow, although you could shim'm.

Funny you mention Wald! I called them today...the guy I talked to said they are not really into headsets any more. He couldn't give me ANY specs or dimensions on the 4080! He did remember the dimension .833" or 13/16". My stem is .875 or 7/8". I had written it off....

Guess I'll revisit that option!

Whenever I talk to the Wald guys, they only wanna talk about baskets, and refer m to the LBS for anything else. The one bro said it was all about liability; i dunno. I do know that niagara cycle has 819 units in-stock as i type this, for the princely sum of $5.73 each. I also wanna tell you that, if you got a 7/8" stem, you'll need to use a different topnut, as the Wald headset ships with a 21.1mm ID topnut. But, don't fret; virtually any 1"x24tpi topnut will work with this headset.
