The subject says it all. I've got a set of NOS Royce Union old school touring style brake levers, similar to these:

Can I use them with basic cantilever brakes, non V-brakes? I noticed the LeeChi MTB ones I have use an internal return spring, these don't. I hope I can use them, they fit the look I'm going for better than the black plastic MTBs.

Any help?

Cheers!

Doc, I can't say for sure (I only use spring loaded levers) but I would think that the springs on the brakes would probably snap the lever back into position after each use. The only problem that might come up would be that the cable end is slightly different in size or shape.

if by chance you have mid-late 80's shimano cantis move the plastic widget/spring on the back to the 'non slr' position if so equipped. touring levers don't have a lot of travel and are a little flexy and wobbly so the feel may not improve as much as you hope..... :D

Chainy,
I think I'm OK on the cable end, got a new set of 'generic' cables. Honestly, I need to do a test fit to be sure, thanks for the headcheck.

Bendix,
I think they are Shimano clones. I'm a TOTAL newbie to this stuff, I'll post some pics tonight, hopefully that will help.

Cheers!

None of my old canti-equipped MTB's had return springs on the levers. Each canti arm has its own spring. V-brakes would definitely be a no-no because they need more cable travel than those old levers will provide.

you should be fine, i don't think anybody ever cloned the 'slr' feature. plus it's only a few minutes to hook one up and try it :)
