Usually every other year my wife and I take a nice vacation. I would like to go someplace bike friendly, have any of you flown and taken your bikes? If so what did you have to go through?? I'm afraid to know!

I wouldn't trust the baggage handlers. I would make arrangements to rent a bike in the town I was going to, if no rental places maybe someone here might know someone there and set you up with bikes.

Where are you thinking? Portland and Minneapolis, both have bike programs in their infancy I do believe. I know for sure Minneapolis does. Both places are bound to have co-ops and such that would rent with collateral...

you could always rent bikes, check with whatever hotel your staying at. my mom and dad just got back from florida and the hotel had townie balloon models for the guests to ride.... for free.

I've always wanted to do this:

http://www.mauidownhill.com/

Not recommending this particular company, just an example. There are scads of downhill tours to choose from.

My sister has a time share on Maui, I need to take her up on her offer one of these years if I ever have a few $$$.

Have a great vacation!

one solution is to buy a Huffy at the local Walmart at the beginning of your vacation and donate it to charity at the end.

I've done that and it was fun...very easy and our tour had us stop at some cool little coffee shop for breakfast, very tasty! Very cold on top of the volcano at about 4:00 AM (so you can watch the sunrise) and very warm by the time you get done around 10:00AM.

stepchld,

would you go for the guided tour next time? Last time I researched it online, I decided that I would just do the sunrise, and rent the bikes for the trip down without the guide and group. I'm too much a photographer, and would want to stop for pictures way more often than the group would. Also, I think I would find out what kind of bikes they provide. Just asking since you have been there, done that?

If your flying and planning on staying at one location I'd just check into renting and not mess with taking bikes.
We drive on all our trips no matter how far that way we can take our bikes with us and be ready to ride no matter where were at.
We're planning on going to Alaska next year and this will probably be the exception and we'll fly and just rent bikes once there.

I would do the guided tour thing...they stop often and seemed to have no problem w/ stragglers, after all this is geared for riders of all abilities.
As to the bikes, (and keep in mind my info is about 10 years old) seems like they were Konas w/ some heavy duty front drum hubs and cruiser style frames (all handbrakes and rear freewheel). Upright riding position and I remember really liking the bike but this was before I "did" bikes so was a newb and not sure on the details. I do remember them saying they replace the bikes every year due to wear and tear.
