I used to live in Madison. It's a bike friendly town and people really take advantage of it. Miles and miles of bike trails, really nice bike trails that span and criss-cross the city, not like the ones we have in Cleveland:

And this particular bike path only runs the length of a shopping center. Thats it. None of the brainiacs here thought that maybe it's the ride to the shopping center where cyclists would like to be protected from traffic. Not much of a view either!

In Madison there's a lot of year-round bike commuters, road cyclists, and triathletes. I don't recall seeing many cruisers but that's before I got into rat rodding. It would be interesting to see if the contents of the vending machine are directed to one particular group of consumers or if it's a little more universal in terms of selection.

I can remember coming out of a popular downtown Madison restaurant and instead of cars there were about 60 bikes crammed into a couple of bike racks out front. Those folks might need a tube patched or a fresh battery for the late ride home, especially if the bike shops are closed. I'm pretty sure the vending machine is between the downtown area where all the nightly entertainment is and all the east side of the city which is very residential, so it looks like it's in a good spot.

I might be going to Madison in a month or so, if I do I'll take some pics.

you didnt read the caption with the pic. :)

so your rolling down the bike path and get a flat, ya just pull up to the vending machine and purchase a new tube/patch kit.
(or healthy snacks, water bottles and other bike friendly items.)

i also ran across an unusual bike item. yesterday on my way home from pool, i saw a guy on a mountain bike pulling a full size canoe.
a small bike trailer hitch connected to the front of the canoe, and a pair of wheels clamped to the very back of the canoe (canoe was upside down)
was quite a sight to see the old dude trying to pull it up a rather steep hill.

Cool idea....Only wish it was sponsored by a LBS in stead of competition ?
But in an emergency do you really care..

Ok now ya got me thinking, I just need to get a rusted out Corvair van and load it up with a portable compressor,26,24,20 inch tubes Crispy Kreme donuts, Coffee, spoke tools a couple of crescent wrenches, couple cans of oil, Duct tape, and I can be official Rat Service Ride Maintinence......
