Well...after 15 years of loyal service the old 27" Zenith is about to bite the dust. :(

Every few minutes the picture squishes down to about a 5 inch line in the center of the screen.

The kiddos start crying and I have to come in and bang the top of the set to get it to work again...felt like I was on an old 70s sitcom.

As every red blooded American man desires to own a big new shiny flat screen TV, I'm finding myself a bit torn on what to do.

After pricing flat screens and figuring the cost of the extras like the cables, the stand, etc....it starts to add up really quickly.

I ran a quick search on our local CL and you can pick up a really nice Sony 32" WEGA for about $100.

Seems to be quite a lot of the traditional TVs out there on the CL right now...go figure...ha ha.

So anyway...the struggle continues. I guess I'll have to see what the old tax return looks like this year.

Steve, I'm in the same boat as you are. I really want to get a nice big flat screen before NASCAR season starts in a month, but I can't see spending that kinda money on a TV. I hear the Vizio's are pretty good for the money, plus all the Vizio's I've seen at Costco come with an HDMI cable. Costco also adds another year of warranty free of charge to all their tv's (at least here in Cali.)

maybe we should start a show us your tv thread! lol my 50inch looks pretty darn good!!!

*not trying to brag or show ya up steve, just fortunate of my tv

Easy E

Yeah My 50" tv is does not make me feel so good... Its a Panasonic 50" LCD (not plasma) that I bought five years ago Got a pretty good deal at the time. Cost about $3500 once you figured in Washingtons 9% sales tax... Its been a pretty good TV and I wouldn't want to go back to a small one.... My beef is you can now buy the exact same TV for about $600 new.... Makes me ill every time I see one in a store.... I guess it really is a good thing because someday I'll have to buy a new one and I would rather it be cheap! As an owner of a big TV I would tell you to find a nice Sony flat tube that someone is dumping in the 32 to 37" range for a $100..

The big TV is nice when your watching movies and fun when your playing the playstaion... But the reality is that time spent in front of the TV is a waste of our lives, The best thing you could probably do for your kids is not replace the old set at all! ( I know, not the question... But it really is the trurh)

I have a 32" Sylvania Tube TV
that i regret buying
Only because it doesnt have enough inputs.

I got it for $500 about 2 years ago, and its probably about $200 now

im sure you can find some really cheap tvs somewhere. Try circuit city, they should be liquidating soon

I'm with ya there Larry.

It's a love hate relationship at our house. We love watching certain shows occasionally, but most of it is trash. We also don't like the zombie like control it has over our kids when they watch. We try to seriously limit their viewing time and are really strict on what they can watch. These days even the commercials are dicey.

We were going to dump our 27" Sony before Christmas but, with both of us working for Chrysler we decided to wait until we saved a bit more money. Hopefully we both keep our jobs and don't experience any more pay cuts. If any one is thinking about buying a new car please buy a American car, I need a new TV!

I just cut my sattelite off because it was a bill i didnt need right now, so now i just turn my sterio on alot more and i think it is more entertaining. I was listening to some John Meloncamp the other night and my daughter came in and made me dance with her it was cool. and shes 17 years old

i think that the new flatscreens look really really horrible
just my $0.02

id get some old one off of craigslist
save the environment man
TV aint great anyway, dont know what its like in the US but in the UK it is just rubbish from morning to night

I just bought a new sharp aquos 42" LCD about four months ago and am real happy with the picture.
As far as everything on TV being garbage I disagree. I watch several public television programs with my 4 year old on a regular basis. I think Sesame Street rules :D , and am fascinated with a show called How its made. In my opinion it is just like everything else in life. If you monitor what you and your family consumes it can be of benefit, but if you use it as a babysitter then it is not a good thing.
What about spending hours on the internet looking at the evil BICYCLE PORN.
I think the good book says it best "All things in moderation, nothing in excess"

dont get sesame street in england without paying for a subscription :(
used to watch it when i was a kid though, i even saw it at the theatre and i have a colouring in book
sesame street is the business 8)

My wife and I both were raised in a house without tv. We grew up in a rural area, and we had 2 to 3 channels we could get, but they were fuzzy. So once we got married, we decided that we wouldn't have tv. We have a tv for watching movies, and if there is any decent tv shows(we like Lost), you can get them on DVD... That's just how we do it. When we went on vacation, they had digital cable, and we spent more time flicking channels than watching anything. Plus you're bombarded by commercials. We just couldn't justify the expense or the time wasted. I probably wouldn't have built nearly as many bikes as I have if we had tv... Just my 2 cents...
