What is the best way to "renew" unpainted parts such as fender braces , kickstands, and fender braces that were not painted from the factory? :?: I have several pieces that are rusty or corroded. I'm guessing a good cleaning and repaint with dull aluminum paint. Anybody got a better idea?

for small stuff like fenders braces i clean them, sand them and then shoot em with silver metallic krylon fusion (it sorta looks like a cadmium finish). doesnt work for nuts and bolts so much as they get scratched putting them back on, but for fender braces it works good. ive used it on handlebars too and it looks pretty good.

if your going to be doing A LOT of stuff, id get a plating kit from eastwoods or something similar, but the cost of doing larger stuff gets too spendy for a one time deal IMO.

Most of what I have worked on has been Schwinn. I use a scoth brite pad that mounts to a drill and "buff" the piece clean, follow up with laquer thinner to clean, and clear coat. This has worked very well on kickstands and fender braces.

Bead blast the parts with fine beads and then spray them with clear Krylon. If the fender braces are pitted, file them first and get all the pits out, then bead blast and spray with clear matte finish Krylon and they'll look like new braces. I have some that I did 15 yrs ago and they are still pretty nice. Gary

Here's a pic of a rusty kickstand I bead blasted and sprayed with clear. It's holding up just fine and looks right. Gary

It's a prewar stand made by B.C. Jiffy Co. from Chicago. It has a 1934 patent date. "Jiffy stands" were used on some Harley Davidsons. I've only bumped across two of them in 20 yrs of collecting. Gary

On schwinns I always wire wheel or sand the kickstand/fender braces and clear coat them. Works fine
