so I made some changes to my ride and wanted to share to get your opinion. I was on a ride with my daughter and hit some dirt road that sent my middle weight tires did not like. I was a kinda wobbly so I decided to put some balloon tires on it.

So I started with this

changing tires gave me an excuse to swap rims and do a little more.....

So now do I keep the chain guard or not?

Any other ideas? I am thinking about a disk brake in the front and swapping the two speed Bendix out for a nexus 7 speed.

I like the change 8)
The chain guard patina really matches the frame but if it rattles, lose it (my $.02)
Shifters and cables really change the look (not good or bad, just different)
Unless you go crazy-custom parts like some of the innovative/talented people here
7 speed might make it more ridable and maybe not be too much more weight
Sometimes modern drivetrain components make a rider easier to put more miles on
Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply, I do ride the sf bay trail and it dose rattle. So I think I will lose it, the only thing holding me back from the nexus 7 speed is the cables. I just like the clean look with out them. I wonder if there is a way to hide the cables......

If you do go that way post up how you spread the forks. Not sure about yours but I need to spread mine about 1 inch to get it to fit.

on the steel frame get some all thread rod and some nuts and washers. put the nuts and washers inside the drop outs and crank the nuts outward enough to spread the drop outs. Measure your hub and widen a little bit more, as the steel will flex back a bit.

You can easily put the original wheel and hub back on the frame if you want to. the original axle and nuts will spring it back.
