I'm looking for a car mounted bike rack for my wifes car, just trying to see what everyone else uses. I drive a little Ford Ranger so it's no biggie to throw the bikes in back and go but we'd like to start taking our boy with us instead of leaving him behind. It's not so easy to fit 2 people plus a kids seat in the cab to go anywhere so need to figure something out for my wifes car. She drives a Dodge Magnum with a funky shaped liftgate and I'm trying to find something that fits the odd shape and can hold a cruiser bike.

heres a pic of how the liftgate opens ... any suggestions (not digging a roof rack btw)

So far I'm going to try to take a look at a Saris Bones or Bike Porter

That dog crate is built like Fort Knox.

Dog crate? I thought it was a baby cage. Most racks will work with a lift gate. I have a Hollywood, it was cheap, but the strap system is sort of lame.

This lifgate has a weather strip on the front edge, if you screw it up water gets in the headliner when it rains. My lbs only carries bell carriers, the straps kind of creep backwards without much effort when strapped on the sides of the roof portion.

I like our Thule that mounts to my class 1 trailer hitch receiver. Nothing touches the car's paint, and it will lay down out of the way should you need to open the lift gate. My PT lift gate just clears it, so I don't have to lay it down.

Next time, I think I'd look at a hitch mounted platform version. Some bike frames are a challenge to fit and strap down with our version.

Im gettin a swagman xtc 2 for the girlfriends mini cooper. We usually take my pickup but taking them an hour or so away to the seawall gets costly in fuel. You do however need a trailer hitch to use that style it holds the bike by the wheels instead of the frame since I dont want to scratch the paint or I bring one of my electras also I dont want to rely on a few straps and put alot of pressure on the back window. you may want to look into them just my 2 cents

I put a trailer hitch on our Chevy HHR with an Allen 3 bike rack. Tried a strap on 2 bike rack and it looked like the hinges tried to stretch a little.
Two cruiser bikes are a lot of weight on a hatch. The hitch transfers the weight to the frame and are available for most cars.
