OK, being a relatively new board member if I'm stepping out of bounds here just say so...
Has anyone given any thought to anything along the lines of a "realistic" prices forum, not really sure how feasible it would be but it was a thought?
I don't mean anything hard and fast, more along the line of averages, "Hey I just bought a...for $X amount...", something to compare Ebay, Craigs List prices to. I don't see a lot of ridiculous prices here in the "For Sale" forum, but I sure see some hideous (at least what I thought was hideous) prices on Ebay and Craigs List!

Another thought I just had was a spread sheet of say pre 50's bike parts sizes (Head sets, bottom brackets, seat posts, etc), figure the knowledge base is here on the forums. I know I've had to deal with some trial and error on what is my first project... again just a thought, or maybe the ganj is kickin' in?

Not out of bounds, and a good idea. Impractical, however. There are literally thousands of parts for hundreds of different brands of bikes. You'd need a huge website to cover it all...and a webmaster working 24/7!

A size/interchangeability guide would be nice, but again you're talking hundreds and hundreds of parts. You are correct, the knowledge base it here on the forum. We did have a data base but apparently lost it when the forum updated the software. Ask lots of questions and build you own knowledge base. Gary

B607 has a point, any list you did, by the time it was done would need updating the way prices fluctuate anyway.
If you have a specific question re: value or interchangeability probably best to just start a thread and ask it! Ask the question in the title if you can, that way those with the knowledge can respond quickly... ;)

Yea it was the ganj!
Even before I read the replies I was kind'a coming to the same conclusions... after thinking about it clear headed. I do agree with the keeping prices on "For Sale" section posts as CeeBee mentioned, maybe a new forum protocol at hand?

What actually got me thinking about the whole price guide thing is I bought an early pedal lot, five pairs, got the pair I wanted and disassembled, cleaned up. and greased the remaining sets. They're pretty respectable looking now, so I started browsing Ebay to get some pricing ideas... If you plotted the prices on a chart it would look like a sawed off shotgun blast, prices were all over the place!

As far as the sizing thing goes, I may have just resolved that with a new digital calipers. Next project I still may ask on the forum then I won't end up with stuff that doesn't fit. I'll leave the asking prices intact when I list the stuff in the "For Sale" section:grin:

Any ways, thanks for taking the time to reply folks...
