vintage schwinn mt. bike?

Looks vintage, but is it factory, or someone added the derailleurs?

Educated guess: it's a Schwinn High Sierra, High Plains or similar, that someone has put parts from a Le Tour type bike on ( chainring, bars )...

The first Schwinn bikes were based off of the Varsity frame with bmx parts. My vote is a Varsity. Here is another that Markm did.

regarding the price point, my thought is that the frame is cool retro schwinn mt bikey, but not $100 worth of cool.. thoughts?

I would not pay more than $50 bucks for a Varsity if I was looking. Schwinn made lots of them during the 10spd bike boom.

Yep. You would need to find new brakes with long reach or go back to the 27" wheels.

that is a just a cheapo road bike frame with the wrong wheels on it. :lol:

They are bomb proof frames, great for commuter bikes but they won't take the fat cruiser tires, good frames ... Just nothing special

Schwinn did a varsity based MTB called the sidewinder 83-84(?) that was the replacement for the Kingsting MTB. they were made from steel and the BMX style forks were prone to bending when
pushed hard.
The brakes also sucked just like the Kingsting's but they did handle better. Did see a couple of them that had the Varsity flat blade forks on them since they seemed to bend less with abuse.
the Siera series and the cimerrons came after the this bike.

looking back at the pictures , it almost look like its on 24"wheels and deserve 26"
the parts look oversized if its a 27"wheel frame

good catch! your right! fat tire 26 inch rims and tires are about the same height! and the brakes are not the elongated ones like on the sidewinders its a converted varsity. it would be easy to
finish the conversion though, have seen 26" BMX style forks for 40 bucks on several websites. the sidewinders were kind of cool and I still have a friend that rides his, I stepped off of my kingsting
3 years ago. the brake conversion was pretty simple all you had to find was find the longer rear brakes off a tall 10 speed.
