what are these bolts called?!

theres on on each side of a three piece crank. theyre solid and round with threads at the end. they hold the cranks on the center axle. i need to replace them, but i dont know what to ask for. thanks

im might just have to try this tommorow. i was going to try normal bolts, but the studs (what ive been calling them) are tappered, not flat.
 
What you have is referred to as a "Cottered Crank". The items you describe, Cotter Pins, come in a variety of sizes. Overall length, diameter, and "pitch" of the flat part are all factors. By all means, have these items in hand when you go to your local bike shop. There are MANY different sizes!
