It's a 5-speed StingRay, but it's not a Krate - assuming it's not had parts swapped out. The Krates came with a springer fork and 16" front wheel. The shifter (again, assuming it's original to the bike) dates to no later than 1973. I believe 1974 was the year crossbar shifters were banned for safety reasons. The serial number will tell you when it was made. The number will be on either the head tube or left rear drop out.

http://www.bunchobikes.com/serialnumber2.htm has the info for decoding the serial number.

Cool bike, the 5-speeds are one of my favourite 'Rays - what are your plans for it?

Whats the S/N #?

Im no Schwinn expert, but something dont look quite right about it. :?:

Cool bike! I personally think that was a carefully built Schwinn Krate/stingray cross, the comment about the overload is true, and that certainly is odd. If someone did build it, they did a a great job. It could be a five speed stingray original, I didn't know such a thing existed. I would estimate it to be worth $200-300 but that is a ROUGH estimate, I don't closely follow the stingrays. Best of luck!
