Has anybody found a way to get rid of old tires? I know places take car tires ,but what is everybody doing with old bike tires....Help mine are stacking up.

I was thinking of something a little less artsie craftsie...like maybe sneak over to your neighbors house at night and put 30 or so in the back of his pickup. Carry them to NASA and see if they would shoot them to the moon. Something. I thought about cutting them up with my bandsaw and chunking them in the garbage ,but I'm not sure if that is a recomended EPA method of disposal.

around here they are fine to be disposed of in a normal landfill
unlike car tires which must be recycled

I take mine to my friendly local tire store. I think they sell them to a local cement kiln that burns them as a fuel source which although it sounds nasty is an EPA approved disposal method 8)

I cut some in half and used them on the bottom of my garage door so the rain dont come in.
Drive around the neighborhood and throw them out the window, one for each household.

I actually heard why they don't like tires at the landfill, they tend to work their way back to the surface*. If you cut them into quarters, you should be golden.

I seriously doubt this is a problem for bike tires, but it wouldn't hurt.

(*this is from somebody who worked there.)

Cut em' in two, turn them inside out, get some aluminum flat stock, a few small bolts, some braces and you have a super ratty indestructible set of fenders. They can also be cut to make a nice little mudflap. The cords are cloth but they have a wire bead. Other than the bead they're easy to cut into whatever shape you want. I've even seen skinny road tires made into belts.

if theyre garbage trash them....if theyre usable post on the free section of the classifieds....im sure some one would love some cheap tires

Make SOFT JAWS for your vice out of them.

I cut up a worn out balloner to fit my vice jaws perfect.

Here in Ontario, there's a $5 tax per tire (car tires) the gov't started to help cover the cost of recycling old rubber. Just about everyone that retails tires takes in the old ones.
All you have to do is ask nicely if you can put your old bike tires in the bin, odds are excellent they'll let you free of charge :D
Next time you go to your major department store that sells car tires, just ask the automotive manager.
See how easy it is to do the right thing?

I'm afraid that term to be realistic would have to be dont make them in the first place. Probably 90% of what we put in landfills wont degrade. I'm pretty sure that the fee you pay goes to have the tires shredded and then they are used to line the landfills so they dont leach all of the other stuff into the water table. There have been everybody and his brother trying to invent ways to dispose of tires. They dont mind them in a landfill if they are cut in half where the compression and contraction of the earth dosent make them popup again.Besides once full and the property sits there for a few years they sell it and build a new subdivision on top of it.

Here in the Phoenix area they are using rubberized asphalt on the freeways. They are alot quieter and smoother. If I remember right recycled car tires are part of the mix.
