I've got 2 hubs to choose from for my Raleigh 20.
1) SA aw
Pros
Correct for bike, English just like the bike, bomb proof, good old classic shifter
Cons
Heavy, geared a little wide.

Shimano nexus 3
Pros
Lighter, newer, has coaster brake so no need for rear brake, geared a little better
Cons
Not period, twist shift only, I'll have to cut it out of a wheel I'm not using but may want to use the wheel in the future

So what do yay think? Both have strong points. I've narrowed it down to these two only. If you were me, what would you use?

I run Sturmey's, and put the shimano stuff on her bikes...
Had a brand new nexus lock up....
The nexus has no real seals, basically it has suggesting the dirt stays out seals....and water, well the nexus 3s rust, rust almightily.
Tough out the wider ratio, it is worth it. My wife said going from a sturmey to a shimano girlied her pedaling up real nice. Her way of saying it pedals to easy....

I'll go with the classic then. Any advice on what size cog to use? I'm guessing the one on it now (on the old steel rims) is a 17 tooth. Would I see much improvement with a 19 tooth or should I jump to a 21?

This thing has 20" wheels. don't go too low. What size sprocket????

I'd suggest using Sheldon's gear calc to find a sweet spot. Figure out the gear-inches for your favorite singlespeed. Then, try to get your AW's gear 2 as close to that figure as you can. Use that (it's the direct one) as your primary, with an over for downhills and laying "competitor's" to waste, and an under for climbing hills or drunk rides.
