I remember bringing home an Arizona desert tortoise in the wire basket of my Schwinn. It had two big paper boy baskets on the rear fender.
But it has been a long time since I have ridden a bicycle in the desert. As a matter of fact it was 1964, just before Dad was sent to Dong Ha.
Anyhow I remember putting boots in my tires and running thorn proof tubes and sealant because there were so many stickers. I would pick up cactus thorns just riding down a dirt road.

Yes, the desert has its own hazard challenges for sure. Especially off-trail like i do a lot. Hehehe.
I've had cactus seeds blow off while riding past and stick in my leg or arm numerous times. Or flipped up from back tire and stick to the back of my head. Ouch...
I run Mr tuffies in my tires and usually get the kevlar lined tires as well. I don't run sealant in case I need to patch a tube. It creates a huge mess. That trip I didn't have my flat kit with me.
That yucca went through the side wall. Wasn't careful enough leaning the bike against it.
Desert tortoises are now protected endangered species. I have yet to see a live one in the wild. I know of a few grading and construction projects that have been shut down by USFS because someone accidentally ran one over.

Me winning the Moline Criterium in 1978. Steve Depron, owner of Bike & Hike bike shops in 2nd. We left the pack in our dust. I sold the bike a few years after that. My legs weren't long enough for it.

I ride hard, so hard to capture and I usually wear a helmet (and you can't see the bold spots on my head) and mostly with shorts until it is below zero degrees.

Sir, you just inadvertently inspired me to do on and do something that has been on my mind with a certain bike…is that a 76er by any chance?

I'm not sure what you mean by 76er, so no it's not. It is a "war years" Westfield originally had zero chrome and it's my understanding that you had to apply to buy one and prove you needed it for work. It was also just about a basket case when I got it.
That's an old aftermarket chainguard too, not the og. Bike looked green and I almost passed on it but a little rub and I realized it was blue. Fork was bent and broke, rewelded crooked. But the blacked out gooseneck and a decent piece of skiptooth chain with the patina'd blue made me grab it anyway.
