This is the Elgin badged yard ornament I got from CCR. I couldn't find a serial number in any of the usual places. It looks like a Monark frame & sprocket and if so the ID plate on the bottom of the BB could be missing. Or maybe a Columbia w/ peaked fenders. Front wheel is not matched to the rear Elgin marked hub. This is nice and mucho crusty - I'm really enjoying taking these rust buckets and bringing them back to life. I appreciate any info I can get on this. Thanks alot.

... pretty sweet lookin project bike...the coaster brake strap seems to be original

...on a serious note, how much did you pay for the bike? just curious...I'm trying to get a feel for how much are similar bikes in that condition are going for. :?

I don't know if this means anything, but that chain guard, which was chrome at one time, is the same one that was on the girls Western Flyer that I got my Morrow hub from, which was original to the bike, and the hub has a date code for 1935.

Not to mention the "ingenuity' keeping the right side pedal tight...

I'd say 1935-1939 based on some of the pieces I see...

You got your work cut out for you there. Good thing is you can do whatever you want with it, it can't hurt it too much.

Nice to see some ingenuity from the past on that coaster brake... :D

I'd say that's one of the few Monark built Elgins! They didn't start using the aluminum id plates until 46. It says in my book that pre-41 numbers were stamped very deeply in the bb. -Adam

Hi Guys! Thanks for the info. I did not know when Monark started putting the plates on the BB and I figured it was prewar but I didn't imagine it was 1930s. I really like the reflector built into the rack. There is black paint over factory red so some of this may be preserved somewhat. I took steel wool to the bottom of the BB and couldn't find anything but it might show up after sand blasting. Thanks again.
